The Everglades

Choosing a time to visit

When vistiting Orlando Florida, you should definitely consider taking a trip to the Everglades National Park. No matter what time of year you visit Orlando, a trip to the park is always possible as it is open 365 days a year!

There are several different entrances to the park and the opening and closing times vary. The general opening times range from 8 a.m to 9 a.m and the closing times range from 5 p.m to 6 p.m. If you are wanting to take a night time visit to the park however, the Gulf Coast entrance is open 24 hours a day.

Although the park is open 365 days a year you may want to think carefully about the time of year you decide to vist the park due to the Everglades weather. If you choose to go during the dry season (from December through to April) the temperatures are lower than during the wet season, as is the humidity. There are many benefits from visting the park at this time of year.

If your visting the park in the hope of finding a wide aray of Florida Everglades wildlife, this would be the time to visit. There are over 200,000 Alligators throughout the park and even some American Crocodiles and as the water levels drop you will find many of these animals gathered around the remaining water. You will also see a variety of Bird species at this time of year, many of which are endangered, as they often choose to spend their winter in the warmer conditions in the South of Florida. Another great bonus of visiting the park this time of year is the lack of Mosquitoes and other annoying insects, although getting a fine balance is tough as many people will want to visit the park this time of year meaning there is little seclusion and reservations for tours should therefore be made before arrival.

As for the wet season (from May through to November) you should expect the complete opposite of that of the dry season. You will be less likely to see the wildlife as the animals scatter though the plentiful water. The temperatue is often uncomfortable and short thunderstorms are common. If you can put up with the above (and the mosquitoes causing no end of trouble) you will find that you can immerse yourself in the beautiful scenery of the national park without the crouds of people.

Things to do in the Everglades

Once you have arrivied at the Florida Everglades National Park there are many different ways to enjoy your day. You many want to follow one of the hiking trails or choose to go biking on the look out for Alligators or you may want a longer visit. If the latter is the case then camping is a great way to enjoy a longer stay at the park. This is great opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the wilderness and there are a number of different camping locations throughout the park. Whilst spening that extra time at the park you may want to take advantage of the many fishing opportunities, whether you prefer freshwater or saltwater fishing, the park will not dissapoint with its vast amount of Redfish, Snapper and many other species. If you're particulary fond of water sports then you are spoilt for choice at the park. You can choose from one of many kayak or canoe trails, and dont worry if you have not brought your own as these are also available to rent at the park. If your not wanting to explore the park alone you can choose a ranger guided tour, although tours may be limited during the wet season due to the weather and lack of vistors.

There are many different Everglades tour operators who give you the chance to explore. A popular option for many is to take an airboat tour. This is a great way to experience the wildlife at the park and you will be given the opportunity to spot some of the many Alligators, Turtles and possibly some Whitetail Deer and wild Boar.

To visit the park from your Orlando hotel is pretty simple as many different tour options exist. There are many Everglades hotels to choose from in the area too if you decide you want to stay longer than a day. You will also find a lot of tour operators offer the chance to combine a trip here with a day trip to glamorous Miami to indulge in some retail therapy and few hours soaking up the sun on South Beach. A great day trip and fantastic escape from the roller coasters and fast food restaurants of International drive guaranteed to put the bite in your trip.
